Midgar is a huge city, where you start the game at. It consists of 8 sectors, each with their own Mako Reactor. Each sector has a plate section above the slums below.
You start the game at a Station, where you join AVALANCHE in a mission to destroy a Mako Reactor. This first part of the game is described in the Game's Instruction Booklet.
If you are a complete novice to the game, this first part of the game can seem very confusing, and frustrating. You often come across Shinra troops that you have to fight, so make sure you know all about battles.
Barrett and the others will lead you through most of the level, and once the button is pressed you will come up against the First Boss, Guard Scorpion.
|
Once the Scorpion is defeated, you have to get out of the reactor in a certain time limit, helping some of the other's on your way. Once you are safely away from the reactor, you have to escape through some of the cities streets, whilst still being chased by the Shinra troops. |
|
Once you have escaped, you board the Train, where you can learn more about the characters and the plot. You then get off the train at the Sector 7 Slums
|
The Sector 7 Slums are the home to the AVALANCHE HQ, inside Tifa's bar. You can also visit several Shops, and above one of the shops is a training Dojo, where you can learn about Materia etc... |
You now join AVALANCHE on a mission to destroy another Reactor. The layout of the Reactor is more or less the same as the one at the start of the game.
|
When you have set the Bomb inside the Reactor, the Shinra President shows up, and you have to fight Air Buster. |
|
When you have defeated Air Buster, Cloud ends up in a Church in that Sectors slums. It is here that Cloud meets Aeris. However Shinra soldiers soon show up, so Cloud and Aeris have to run for it.
Aeris will lead you to her Home, where you can find a few shops nearby.

|
Once you have made your way through the Midgar Playground you will find yourself in the Wall Market. You soon learn that one of your party are being held here. |
|
This is the first real objective of the game. You have to rescue Tifa from the Mansion of Don Corneo.
|
To do this you have to visit several places around the Market, including a Bar, and Strip Joint. You soon learn that the only way into the Don's Mansion is by dressing Cloud up as a Girl. Just follow all the clues you are given, and you should find Tifa in no time. |
After you rescue Tifa, you will find yourself in some Sewers, it is here that you face Apps.
You now make your way through the Sewers, and across the derelict Train Yard (hint: The Trains can be moved), back to Sector 7. Here you learn that Shinra are about to drop the Plate above the Slums, in the hope of wiping out AVALANCHE. At the top of the Plate you encounter Reno for the very first time.
|
You soon return to the Wall Market, where you first task is to climb up the plate. You'll need to find some batteries, which can be obtained from the Weapons Shop. |
|
|
Once you have reached the top you are faced with the decision of how to enter the Shinra HQ. |
To make your way to the top floors of the Building, where you have to rescue Aeris, and you also meet Red XIII
When you find Aeris you come up against HO512
When you Aeris and Co. travel down the lift they come up against Hundred Gunner and Heligunner.
Cloud has to fight Rufus and Dark Nation on top of the Building.
|
Cloud and Co. escape the Shinra Building in some vehicles, and Cloud has to protect the others from the Shinra Bikes. |
|
At the end of the Road Cloud comes up against Motor Ball.
Once you have defeated Motor Ball your party leaves Midgar. Your next objective is too make you way to Kalm.
After Diamond Weapon has been defeated you Parachute into Midgar. Your final goal is the Sister Ray, which poses to destroy all hope of saving the planet.
At the start you climb down a long ladder into a large industrial area, this can be quite confusing to find you way about.
You will see that there are quite a few Treasure Chests dotted around the place, it is well worth you time to try and pick all of these up.
HINT: At the bottom of the first ladder you will see a fence, you can walk through this to reach a few of the Chests.
After you have collected the Chests, head down the slope near the first ladder, and climb down the ladder at the bottom.
On the next screen go left and up the ladder, which leads to another Box.
Then walk to the right, the platform underneath you should collapse, head left and climb the ladder on the far left of the screen.
Enter the pipe at the top of the ladder, this should take you to another area to the right. There are a few more boxes here, then you should head up the stairs, towards a save point. Exit this area through the pipe.
From the point where you enter the tunnels, head all the way south (there are some more boxes dotted about). Ignore all the other characters who tell you to turn back. After about 10 tunnels you will finally reach the W-Item Materia near a save point. You then need to head all the way back to where you started.
Look in the Hint & Cheats section for information on how to use the W-Item Materia to replicate Items.
If you miss the W-Item Materia, you can dig it up in Bone Village on Disc 3.
After a couple of steps Northward from the point where you entered the tunnels you will encounter the Turks again.
On the next screen upwards you will probably meet one of your Characters. The left hand exit leads to the Sister Ray, but don't go there yet!
It is vital that you go here before going near the Sister Ray, as there are a few items to pickup that you cannot find anywhere else.
To get to the Shinra Building, take the Right Hand exit.
Turtles Paradise Flyer
On the ground floor of the Building you will find a Flyer that you might have missed at the beginning of the game.
Shop
If you visited the Shop on the 1st Floor at the start of the game, you may remember that there were a couple of Chests that you couldn't open. Well you can now open them.
Cait Sith's Ultimate Weapon
Find a save point, and use the PHS to put Cait Sith into your Party. Head up to the 64th floor, and search through the lockers until you find Reeve's Locker (you should have worked out who Reeve is by now). Inside the locker is the HP Shout Weapon.
Once you have finshed in the Shinra Building you can head back to the Sister Ray. Just after you enter the area, a Boss turns up.
Once the Boss has been dealt with, head to the Save Point and place Barrett into your party. Head up the stairs and look for a Chest, inside it is the Missing Score.
You can return to the Save Point and take Barrett out of your Party again if you need to.
Now just head all the way up the stairs, until you meet up with Hojo.
Once the three bosses have been defeated the game will enter into another automatic sequence, where the characters will leave the ship, and then return.
After another FMV sequence you will finish the 2nd Disc, and move on to the 3rd. And you will find yourself ready to decend into the Northern Cave.
In the tunnels you have the option of fighting Reno, Rude and Elena.
When you approach the Sister Ray, Proud Clod turns up.
At the top of the Sister Ray you have to fight 3 incarnations of Hojo (with no break inbetween). They are Hojo, Heretic Hojo and Lifeform Hojo.
