The Calder Aire link was officially opened on 26th June 2007, with an event which saw horse riders, walkers and mountain bikers turning out to battle the elements and try a section of this new 17-mile route.
The route, which is the first of three key links planned to improve access to the Pennine Bridleway, runs from St Ives Estate near Bingley to join the Mary Towneley Loop near Widdop reservoir in Calderdale.
A new car park incorporating an area for horse boxes has been provided at St Ives Estate or for those travelling by train, Bingley station is only a short walk or cycle away. The route also features a "Pegasus" (or horse, bike and walker friendly) crossing at the busy A629 Keighley road.
Now, the route doesn't yet have an "official" trail of caches, though there are quite a few within a couple of minutes walk from the trail (see below), but with the publishing of this page, I hope a few cachers will be inspired to put a few caches out. See the discussion in the forum .
We had read that conditions down the hole were a bit cramped so it made sense to send the smallest stonefielder (aged 3) down! This caused more than a little sibbling rivalry so his 6 year old sister also joined him in the whale. 66 has been claimed as the age of the oldest finder I assume 3 is the youngest? This was superb fun, I'm afraid they were rather excited on reaching the treasure to be discrete thankfully there was no one else around. For anyone thinking of calling social services we have done a lot of climbing and both kids were belayed with chest harnesses - I wouldn't recommend taking small kids to this one otherwise. Took TB left swops Excellent fun- Many thanks
