Wessenden Hike by the stonefielders GC169PY PDF Print E-mail

The Wessenden Hike by stonefielders is one of our favourites because it offers exceptional walking in a superb landscape of high moorland with spectacular reservoirs.  It is a circular walk along the Kirklees Way and Pennine Way, with enough up and down bits to keep it interesting.

It is a walk of around 9k in the Wessenden Valley taking in 6 traditional caches which hold the clues to the location of a final cache.  We completed the hike in about 2 hours and 20 minutes doing all the caches in the series.  A total distance of 7.37Km not including the return to the car.

Cache is at N53.35.ABC W001.55.DEF
The coordinates for the parking area are N 53° 35.587 W 001° 55.681

The 6 caches in the Wessenden Hike series are best done in the listed order:
GC12F1D Rams Clough Bridge
GC12F22 Butterley & Blakeley view
GC169PJ Hey Brinks
GC169PN Upper Wessenden
GC169PQ Hey Sike
GC169PT Blakeley Overlook

These 6 caches each hold a card with 2 digits on, which relate to 2 of A,B,C,D,E or F.
So you'll be able to find the coordinates for this cache after visiting 5 of the 6 caches. It also means the cache can still be found if one of the 6 traditionals goes missing.

If you follow the route described, it will lead you up onto a contouring waterways leat along which are Rams Clough Bridge, Butterley & Blakeley view and Hey Brinks.
Beyond where the leat joins the rising track is Upper Wessenden overlooking Wessenden Head Reservoir.
Returning down the track, which is wonderful for mountain biking, you'll find the final 2 caches, Hey Sike & Blakeley overlook.

If you are feeling really fit, you can also go for four other caches in Wessenden Valley, three of which are by stonefielders.
